John Wayne spielt den ältesten, der vier Söhne, der kürzlich verstorbenen Katie Elder. Seine Brüder sind ein hitzköpfige Spieler (Dean Martin), ein gescheiterte Ladenbesitzer (Earl Holliman) und ein College-Student (Michael Anderson Jr.).
Die Vier kommen zu Katies Beerdigung wieder zusammen. Als sie danach auch versuchen, Katies Nachlass zu regeln, erfahren sie, dass die große Ranch, auf der sie aufgewachsen sind, nun dem zwielichtigen James Gregory und seinem Sohn (Dennis Hopper) gehört. Katie starb arm, da ihr Mann die Ranch in einem Spiel an Gregory verloren hatte. Den Vier kommt die Sache komisch vor und sie beschließen, der Sache auf den Grund zu gehen.

Henry Hathaway's "The Sons of Katie Elder" is a robust, entertaining Western. Not quite a meaningful genre entry in the vein of "High Noon" or a gritty piece of work like "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly," the film has qualities of those Westerns, but its Hollywood gloss obscures traits that might make it truly stand out. Still, it is a high quality film that excels at what it does.
When Katie Elder passes away in her frontier town, her sons gather to bury her. After the funeral, the four men must deal with their reputations and those of their family members in the town and protect the Elder name. A set of interesting themes gives way to token…
The Sons of Katie Elder starts off wholesome and quaint, filled with traditional values like many John Wayne westerns. Then it stops being light and gritty themes of injustice enter the plot, aided by increased violence and death. John Wayne plays the tough macho man with his heart in the right place, as usual, but this is probably one of his better performances, especially in the grief-fuelled final act. The Sons of Katie Elder does well to define its characters, allowing the 4 lead brothers to have good chemistry. The film also manages to make Katie Elder a fully-formed character despite her not appearing in the film, defining her just through the others as a kind woman and a loving…
This is basically Four Brothers but set in American Wild West and led by John Wayne who made this very entertaining to watch with doing his usual stuffs like showing off his masculine tough guy appearance and some action skills. This story is told very slowly, reveals the answers to central murder at moderate pace and along the way it gave some conflicts, twists, actions and light-hearted funny moments to keep the viewer interested. It kind of worked and I felt engaged to story and characters become more and more distinctive (weak villains tho) but overall runtime is so long that I lost some of my interests toward the end (If not for shooting at the bridge I could see myself rating lower than this). Having more actions in middle could have been a benefit for the movie.
I would say that I much prefer John Wayne's later career westerns than his earlier ones, and The Sons of Katie Elder was an example of the main reason why this is.
Generally they always seem to be a lot more instantly enjoyable. Like Wayne is really enjoying himself and, crucially, not taking himself nearly as seriously as he tended to for a lot of his career. This isn't quite one of his knockabout comedy westerns but it's certainly set up to be one of his more playful ones for the most part, as he bickers his way through the film with his on-screen brothers, Dean Martin, Earl Holliman and Michael Anderson Jr.

Ein in allerlei Hinsicht großartiger Western von Henry Hathaway mit Westernlegende John Wayne und Dean Martin. Gehört zweifellos zu meinen Lieblingswestern 🤠.
GREAT war das Zusammenspiel der vier Elder-Brüder allen voran natürlich John Wayne und Dean Martin. Die Kappeleien der Geschwister untereinander sind herrlich erfrischend.
GREAT ist die Story. Nach dem Tod der Mutter Katie kehren ihre vier Söhne nach Hause und wollen die Gründe des Verlusts ihrer Ranch herausfinden und den Mord an ihrem Vater aufklären.
GREAT ist die Kulisse. So wie ich es gesehen habe, haben die Außenaufnahmen auch tatsächlich draußen stattgefunden. Kein CGI oder sonstige Tricktechnik. Hierdurch wirkt der Film sehr echt, sehr authentisch.
GREAT ist die Musik von Elmer Bernstein.…
When it comes to starring in Westerns, John Wayne was THE man. He could carry a film with little more than a grunt, but when they gave him decent supporting players or an antagonist to spar with, you often got more from The Duke than you'd expect. Here he has both, saddled with Dean Martin, Earl Holliman, and Michael Anderson Jnr as his brothers, and James Gregory, George Kennedy, and a young Dennis Hopper as the villains of the piece. It's not one of Wayne's better westerns unfortunately, but there's enough here to warrant you time.

Another very entertaining John Wayne western that pairs him with his Rio Bravo co-star Dean Martin. And while this isn't Rio Bravo, there's enough action, gunfights, hilarious one-liners, and just plain old western flair to keep fans of the genre very entertained. Strong cinematography and a rousing score by legendary composer Elmer Bernstein, which at times reminded me more than a little of this classic Magnificent Seven theme, do the rest. The whole thing might be a bit too long and loses some energy towards the end but all in all, there really isn’t all that much to complain about. If you like classic Westerns and/or The Duke, there’s no reason not to check out The Sons of Katie Elder.
