This is an in-between Jacques Audiard film for me. Not to the level of Rust & Bone and The Prophet but way stronger than Dheepan. The screenplay is very dark and although plenty of head-scratchers through-out, the conclusion is emotionally satisfying. one of Jake Gyllenhaal's best performances.
Benoît Debie is one of the world's greatest living cinematographers... but goddamn does the digital stick out with this film. Not sure why it wasn't treated better in post. Or again... why a film of this budget and style wasn't shot on film is a mystery to me. Still worth seeing on the big screen. Framing, lighting, production design and locations are top notch.
