A Movie A Day 2013: Day 264
The Good: Jennifer Connelly. Fantastic score by acclaimed composer James Horner; very heroic and uplifting. Jennifer Connelly. Wonderful costume and set design. Jennifer Connelly. Excellent lighting and composition. Johnston perfectly captures the look and feel of the era. Jennifer Connelly. Solid cast; Alan Arkin and Terry O'Quinn (with hair!) stand out as the mechanical genius sidekick Peevy and Howard Hughes respectively. Oh, and did I mention Jennifer Connelly?
The Bad: Story is littered with cliches, contrivances, and coincidences. Billy Campbell does an okay job as the lead, but he lacks chemistry with his leading lady.
The Bottom Line: The Rocketeer is yet another childhood favorite that's not quite as good as I remember. They had all the ingredients to make a great adventure film, it's a shame they dropped the ball with the lazy, uninspired writing. Oh well, at least it had Jennifer Connelly.
