The Queen of Basketball: When the N.B.A. Officially Drafted a Woman
Viola Davis be itching to play this 6-foot-3 kween in an Oscar-bait biopic.
Lucy Harris makes this work. The interview-to-footage style is very standard. However, her extremely humble demeanor, her brutal honesty about her own struggles with her mental illness and her incredible laugh, which comes after basically every sentence she delivers, makes this a memorable little watch.
I don't think it this should beat the football short doc at the Oscars, but it may due to Shaq producing it.

[2022 Oscar-nominated documentary short subject]
As someone who have never been interested in NBA or basketball in general, this was a nice little gem. Informative, neat, enthralling and perfectly-paced. Lucy Harris' bubbly and charming personality really shine throughout its 22 minutes runtime. This short doc is available on Youtube so feel free to check it out!!
Not sure why this captivated me so much but Luisa is just such a queen of a woman oh my goodness. Her spirit and vibrant personality is infectious - I couldn’t keep the smile off of my face! 🥰
Technically I don't think The Queen of Basketball is anything special and basketball isn't a sport I'm interested in at all but I thought Lucie was such a wonderful and captivating interview subject! She really elevated this short doc for me. She was such a cool woman to learn about.

Fairly interesting, did not know the NBA ever drafted a female player before. It’s for the most part just an interview with Lucy about her upbringing, talents and her road to the NBA
It’s your typical close-up / old footage / inspirational background music interview about a person that deserves to have their story told.
— mama, i didn’t know you was a star.
— yeah, i had my days.
i hope she knows we will never forget her, may she rest in peace
"long & tall, & that's not all."
No, Lusia Harris. That's not all.
You may've taken home the silver, but you own the gold in my heart
The Queen of Basketball & The Queen of Basketball have an energy that is indescribably attractive & infectious.
Watching this, I smiled every second...until I cried, & then I did both at the same time.
This is such a special production about such a special woman, & I literally pray that this film's Oscar nomination is enough recognition to turn enough heads in Hollywood for Lusia Harris to get the biopic that she deserves.
& to get it in her lifetime (**edit: Lusia passed away on January 18th of this year. God rest her vibrant soul 🥺)
& to get a good chunk of the millions of dollars it pulls in for her beautiful family of scholarly athletes.

Lusia is such an engaging person, and this doc is so much better because of her narration and her awesome story.
She is not just the Queen of Basketball, but a Queen in general. Such a captivating short documentary.

The most basic style of subject being interviewed with b-roll mixed in documentary. But it’s done effortlessly so. Lusia Harris is unbelievably charming in this and has a compelling story to tell. She was the first and only woman to be drafted into the NBA. At a brisk 22 minutes and engaging editing, it goes by faster than any of the other documentary short films. And it’s surprisingly optimistic about the outcome of her life given the fact that she didn’t end up joining the NBA and also struggled with bipolar disorder. The moment with her showing happiness and pride in her children for succeeding is so wholesome. Rest in peace Lusia.
