  uses a gorgeous western backdrop (including a marvelous jonny greenwood score) to stage a very subtle duel of shifting power dynamics/gender roles and psychosexual tension. not the movie i expected going in and it takes quite awhile to reveal itself—campion is very patient with the filmmaking and deals a lot in the gradual building of detail and implication—but i ultimately found it very rewarding once it did. there's something really felt here in how it slowly sheds its ominous atmosphere of destructive repression and morphs into this strangely vulnerable fable about the presentation of strength and control (especially of the performatively masculine variety) vs. the real thing. very interested in 1) reading the original novel and 2) giving the film another go with the knowledge of its structure and eventual destination in mind.

  Patient almost to a fault; it nearly lost me in the long first act. Cumberbatch’s casting didn’t work for me at all, until what was really going on revealed itself, and then it all clicked into place. By the end, I sort of loved it — and really wanted to watch it again to dig into what Campion was doing in those early scenes that I missed the first time around.
