Jim Hanson’s quiet life is suddenly disturbed by two people crossing the US/Mexico border – a woman and her young son – desperate to flee a Mexican cartel. You're sitting there watching this grizzled symbol of modern stoic masculinity bond with a little Mexican boy on the run from a cartel and you're thinking this seems like something Clint would have passed off on one of his buddies to direct him in. Oh hey this is directed by Robert Lorenz.
Movies that appear to have everything it takes to succeed, if not to be a success, at least to become another enjoyable film, whether it is action, comedy, or horror. However, somehow during the filming and post-production processes, the final product to come as empty.
Although the film's premise is already half worn out, the same could be said for countless films that recycle the same elements, and even then they can be entertaining. The score here is nice, featuring pieces that remind me of Johansson's music in "Sicario". Liam Neeson does what Liam Neeson does, and we are all patiently waiting for his next action-heavy outing (he says he is done, but we will see). Another action thriller from Liam Neeson, with a simple and predictable story. Cinematography was impressive. Directed by Robert Loren, the long time producer of Clint Eastwood, parallels many similarities to the legends style, but feels a bit hurried as a whole. Liam as the lonely old man does what he does and Jacob Perez as the little kid was solid. It’s a no harm watch, but nothing stays with you once it’s over, ending up a below par watch.
From the poster you assume this is another mediocre ‘Liam Neeson out for revenge’ flick…but it’s not!
I mean, he does fuck some shit up, but only briefly.
L.N. is starting to look grandpa old, and fittingly, this movie feels like what a grandpa would do if he had some skills with weapons and was being tracked by a small faction of the Mexican cartel. He is not running at these guys, he is actively trying to ghost them.
Unfortunately that disconnect between the audience wanting to see L. N. give these assholes what’s coming to them, and the actual plot of running away means we are waiting for a payoff that takes far too long to play out.
So in other words, this is the most mediocre movie within Neeson’s recent string of mediocrity.
Old Man Action!
Liam Neeson has made quite the career making the same movie over and over again. The Marksman is a step above his previous effort, Honest Thief. This time it is Liam’s job to protect a young child from the Mexican Cartel. He shouldn’t have any problems, because he’s a Marksman. He can’t miss, right?
The Marksman features a strong performance from little kid actor, Jacob Perez. I like to say little kids either severely hurt or help action films, and I’m glad to say Jacob helps out both in the story and the flow of the action.

"The Marksman" is one of the best Clint Eastwood vehicles I've seen recently. The only thing missing is, of course, Clint himself. Other than that, this film could easily pass as a "Gran Torino" remake. On a more serious note, this is an above average Neeson actioner. Unlike most of his previous outings, his character here isn't just a quiet man out for revenge. He is a broken person seeking redemption, and a cause to live instead of simply surviving.…
Another Liam Neeson movie where he plays the same character with the same plot but this one is uneventful and boring on top of all of that. It's very generic and we all know how it's going to end. Worth watching on a rainy day.
