Set against Paris' oldest bridge, the Pont Neuf, while it was closed for repairs, this film is a love story between two young vagrants: Alex, a would be circus performer addicted to alcohol and sedatives and Michele, a painter driven to a life on the streets because of a failed relationship and an affliction which is slowly turning her blind.

a beautifully-acted co-dependent class romance that carax fills with the human desire to take your miserable real-world surroundings and see the magic in them. the bridge itself is among the greatest feats in production design i've ever seen (an absurdly expensive full-scale replica of the pont neuf in paris that is home to the majority of the film's scenes), and there are some genuinely arresting images in this that are so gorgeous and sensual and massive in conception it feels almost experimental to be applying them to a story this painfully intimate in scale. they sweep you up in the subjective delirium of the huge emotions flying between these two lonesome drifters while never letting you forget the thorny, depressing…
You don't need big effects to stress the fantastical properties of cinema. I'll take the Bastille Day sequence from this over nearly every blockbuster setpiece of the last decade.

the world is a cruel place… we’re merely placed here, nurtured and taught little to no real life skills, and then thrown in head first with this deep lack of knowledge and are somehow expected to traverse our way through the dark streets, the world that has been there many years before us, and figure out the ways of its centuries old structure.

The Lovers on the Bridge is the only Leos Carax work I consider a masterpiece thus far, despite the fact that it's still somewhat afflicted by Carax's typical, off-putting trademarks of emotionally unattainable characters and self-indulgent plot devices.
Having been tormented enormously by the extreme boredom watching Holy Motors and that god-awful Pola X, I have to admit The Lovers on the Bridge is such a breath of fresh air compared to Carax's more experimental efforts. It's an unaffected, visibly heartfelt tale of homeless loners sharing each other's company on a Parisian bridge. Carax is a showman, not a director. He's like Luhrman, but I think his genius is on a greater level, despite the fact that he's not as memorable nor appeals to a wider audience as the Australian filmmaker. The entire scenario with Levant and Binochet driving the boat on the river and all the pyrotechnics is just breathtaking. It goes without saying that the cinematography, direction, and camera work are all superb.
If I had one criticism, it would be that the plot isn't as engaging. Denis and Juliette give their best, playing on the surrealism and intense unwarranted love of these two people to near perfection, but the writing is somewhat weak, if not non-existent. It's possibly a little…
a love story that’s as bold, loud and eccentric as the visuals. Alex and Michèle fling themselves around as fireworks boom behind them. they live their lives freely with passion and love and nothing to hold them down.
except, of course, for: addiction, disease, poverty, fear, and jealously.
they choose to live on an unsafe, deteriorating bridge as they themselves weaken and self-destruct. and only to each other can they cling.
it’s scary and probably wrong. but sometimes when you look around you and all you see is love and beauty, it’s hard to care about that.
