Scarier and more dread-filled than the first one, but with a narrative that is even more bland, 'The Grudge 2' improves on the elements you'd want a horror sequel to improve on, but just never does enough right consecutively to be an engaging watch.
None of the actors are even remotely as charismatic as Sarah Michelle Gellar, and the story suffers because of it. The non-linear storytelling again does no one any favors, as the intersecting plotlines don't allow you to really invest in the characters nor have dread build over their plights consistently.
The more varied "grudges" make this a scarier and more unpredictable affair, but the story makes some absolutely out there choices that didn't make any sense to me. I don't know if the rules or whatever made sense this time, but hey, the creatures are creepy and they can get you wherever, maybe those are all the rules you need?
