  don’t wanna overhype this modest little film, but it cleared my skin, did my taxes, solved Brexit, fixed the Oscars, got the Starbucks guy to stop running, convinced Weezer to retire, killed Mitch McConnell & made me really hungry.

  do wish they'd nix the very final shot, as i feel it undercuts the ending a bit, but the closer a movie is to perfect the more i have to quibble.

  Me laughing embarrassingly loud at a joke that took place in a graveyard is everything you need to know about this film. Lulu Wang is so good at writing conversations it’s not even funny. Nothing I say is gonna do this film justice, just please see it immediately.

  “isn’t it wrong to lie?”

  family is so simplistically complex: grief, joy and despair are often all mixed together. this was so rhythmically calming, and i can’t remember the last time i’ve heard an audience burst into laughter and then stop on a dime to reflect. this is skillfully made and every performance deserves recognition, but as i wrap up my review i’m gonna leave you with three words: awkwafina academy award

  Grandmothers are the best people on Earth. Science has proven it. But I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a movie that so beautifully captured the wonder of grandmas before. Seriously, if you have a grandma in your life, go give them a hug and thank them for being awesome.

  what lady bird did for calling your mom, the farewell does for calling your grandmom

  while awkwafina really steps into her own here, it's zhao shuzhen who delivers my favorite on screen performance of the year. nai nai truly was my grandma for those 98 minutes

  Anyone can probably find something in this film to connect with, but make no mistake: at its core, it is a story about an Asian American’s experience, written and directed by an Asian American woman. To say that it is merely about family is vague to the point of being inaccurate, because the dynamics of what constitute a family are vastly different when it comes to immigrant parents. If you have that experience, you know what I’m talking about: the push and pull between cultures, the shame of feeling like an outsider in both your own skin and your “American” community, and sometimes even the outright rejection of certain parts of your identity.
