  The debut feature from Paula Delsol, The Drifting is a striking illustration of the limitations of our collective memory when it comes to the French New Wave, a movement declared by a voice as authoritative as Criterion to feature only one female director, Agnes Varda. Delsol, who wrote, directed, and financed the film herself, would beg to differ, as would her friend and collaborator François Truffaut, as well as the notoriously masculine Cahiers du cinéma, to which she was a frequent and respected contributor.

  Immediately denied an export certificate for its frankness about female sexuality and reproduction, Delsol's film is a strikingly feminist text, one which embraces its lead character's unmoored nature, and her decision to move through her life…

  i liked this. i like watching women wander and ponder and become unconsciously surrounded by the sea that moves and drifts (see what i did there) when they’re stuck in stasis

  i so wish that there was more to show of delsol cinema !!! this film is so fun 60 years later and there is so much potential. playful songs and playful cinematography. but let me think about it a bit longer. i want to watch again!

  « Bon sang, est-ce que Paula Delsol serait la Michel Brault française ? », me suis-je dit pendant la première demi-heure de ce film à l’intelligence cristalline.

  Son regard sur les sentiments, qui laisse le pathos à notre discrétion, à la mesure de notre investissement, ainsi que son regard tendre et sans jugement sur les petits rôle et figurants sont en effet proches de la touche Brault.

  Après ce premier tiers enthousiasmant, j’ai trouvé que ça s’affaisse dans la répétition épisodique. C’est assez dommage, on a plus l’impression d’une roue de hamster que d’une dérive. Jacquie rencontre une série d’estis de bozos qui la traitent comme une carpette et elle encaisse les agressions avec un sourire jaune comme dans Un…

  Yet another movie that proves that there are a lot of great unknown female film makers out there. Feels very new wave: documentary footage, abrupt transitions, ellipses gives it a restless energy. Our heroine is not particulary likeable but the movie judges her either.

On m'avait vendu le film comme étant à propos d'une femme qui refuse toute concession aux attentes sociales, mais c'est surtout un dictionnaire des différents types d'hommes qui prennent avantage sur elle.   The scenery was beautiful and I liked a lot of the shots, Jacqueline Vandal is a great actress as well, even though I read several times that people didn't like her acting.
  I think the title is very fitting and the plot can be quite entertaining.
  Still, it kind of dragged on around the hour-mark and felt gross after a while, since most men were depicted as predatory and very sexist. I think the plot could have been interesting, but the writing just didn’t let me get close to the characters and by now we all know, I need that emotional shit.
