"Where'd you get those dimples?"
"Well, God gave me my face but he let me pick out my nose."
I watched this film for Matt Dillion mainly because I'm trying to watch all of his notable 80s and 90s films. And this film includes Emilio Estevez and Jennifer Tilly's sister, Meg Tilly. And it is written by S.E. Hinton, who wrote Rumble Fish and The Outsiders, which are two of my all-time favorites.
But, yeah, this film is Matt Dillon + horses in a coming-of-age film. I grew up riding horses, so I feel a special type of love for this film. And it was just overall great. 80s Matt Dillion really has this type of presence when he's on screen he commands your attention no matter who he shares the screen with. But his on-screen chemistry with his brother in this film was amazing.
Was not expecting to hear a score from DePalma's go-to composer the great Pino Donaggio in a Disney film. Yet somehow it works. Matt Dillon stars at the title character, who's parents are no longer in the picture. His brother is left to take care of him. It's easy to see why Matt Dillon became so popular. The camera loves him and he projects a vulnerability behind his boyishly rough exterior.
As director Tim Hunter showed in "Rivers Edge", he's quite adept at stories about restless youth with little prospects. While this is no where near as rough as "River's Edge", don't be fooled by the Disney logo. There's drug dealing, violence and frank discussions of sexual insecurities. Based on a novel from S.E. Hinton, TEX is a mature work that aligns perfectly with "The Outsiders" and 'Rumble Fish". An excellent trifecta of films based on her work also starring Matt Dillon.

After their mother dies and their father leaves them, teenage brothers Tex and Mason McCormick struggle to make it on their own.
Matt Dillon stars in this coming of age drama. The story is of two teenage brothers living together on a small property in Bixby, Oklahoma. Tex (Matt Dillon) is the younger and Mason (Jim Metzler) is the older. Their mother is dead and their father rarely shows up. The brothers are doing everything they can to avoid the clutches of social services.
Tex and his brother get to be heroes when they apprehend a villain on the run who initially holds them hostage. Later Tex gets involved with a drug dealing friend.…
I guess all S.E. Hinton adaptations have to have Matt Dillon and/or Emilio Estevez in them
Perfectly fine little flick where Matt Dillon once again plays a seminal SE Hinton character. Although they really tried convincing me 18 year old, tall, baritone Matt Dillon was 15 in this...
Rating this movie on how sexy Matt Dillon is, this is a solid 4 stars.
Remember when Disney used to make quiet deliberately paced character-driven dramas that would deliver a sincere and realistic window into what it really feels like to be a frightened and confused teenager growing up in a small town? Me neither! But they let Tim Hunter make this one and it's very good.
Beautiful tale of brotherly love with great performances and a serene Pino Donnagio score. It goes without saying that baby Matt Dillon can GET IT. But Jim Metzler? You Betzler!
