"Silenced" is one depressing and important piece of South Korean drama cinema. Based on real events it tells the story of a young man who gets a job as an art teacher at a school for deaf children. He's shocked by the abusive behaviour of his colleagues towards the children but the truth he uncovers is even more terrifying. i feel sick. that was absolutely brutal to watch, and the fact this is based on a true story just makes me want to die. i will never watch this again but what a powerful and well-made film, and i’m glad i’ve watched it because it is so important. the acting was absolutely exceptional, especially from the children.
if you are watching this because it’s from the creator/director of squid game, please don’t expect anything remotely similar, and if you are easily triggered by child/sexual abuse please don’t watch this film.
Silenced is a film that will absolutely destroy you. Even on a second watch, it wasn't any easier. It broke me. It destroyed me. But it is also such an incredible film. For the usual reasons, a haunting soundtrack, incredible performances, particularly with Gong Yoo having the performance of his career, and being able to joke and laugh and have compelling kind characters in a world made of pain and agony. But Silenced is special for one particular reason.

This is based on actual events that happened in Gwang Ju, South Korea. People assume that actual events were dramatized in the movie, but apparently the actual events were more heinous than the movie. I heard that it's actually the idea of Gong Yoo (the main actor of the movie) to shoot this after reading the novel while serving his mandatory military service. He wanted more people to know about this horrible truth. He wanted to raise the attention of the public.
Silenced is based on the sexual, mental, and physical abuse of deaf and hard of hearing children carried out by staff at the now-closed Gwangju Inhwa School in South Korea. The film is melodramatic at times, but that did not make it any less powerful. In fact, the film's release sparked enough outcry to get the school shut down, get more appropriate punishment levied against the abusers, and for South Korea to change its laws.
The child actors are phenomenal, and the film does not hold back in depicting the abuse that the children experienced. My heart actively ached throughout the entire runtime, knowing that so many children suffered at that school at the hands of people who were supposed…

Based on true events of institutional abuse at a Korean school for deaf students, this is a film that will undoubtedly leave you enraged at the heinous acts committed by the perpetrators and the justice systems abject failure to protect those most vulnerable. It's little surprise that something dealing with such horrifying subject matter becomes genuinely difficult to watch at times; the situations reenacted are already disturbing, but what proves just as gut-wrenching is the direct manner in which it depicts the helplessness lead character Kang feels in fighting extensive corruption and the heart-rendering fashion in which it explores the psychological scarring that befalls these innocent children.
