  I do definitely had hopes for this one. Specifically because I love Joko Anwar's works pre-Satan Slaves (and also Satan Slaves itself). The dude also has this perfect branding and persona that he oftenly shapes and shares on social media. Whether his views on politics, religions, social, culture, and even obsessions of the unknown. His past works oftenly reflects his persona and audiences who watched them can feel the love and passion that he put in his films.

  But not until his last two feature films that I felt kinda stumbled upon putting his personal views into his films and the need to satisfy more wider audiences (since Satan Slaves was the first major box office success in his career).…

  5 tahun setelah film pertamanya, Joko Anwar kembali membawakan halaman baru di Pengabdi Setan 2: Communion yang melanjutkan kisah dari keluarga Rini, Tony, Bondi, dan Bapak. Dengan menyajikan latar tempat baru di sebuah rusun tua, Jokan menjadikan film ini layaknya sebuah rumah hantu yang dapat memacu adrenalin penonton dari awal hingga akhir

  Kita berbicara dari hal yang gw suka dari film ini: Teknisnya. Scoring-nya juara banget. Nonton film ini di studio yang Dolby Atmos bakalan menjadi pilihan yang tepat. Sinematografi dari seorang Ical Tanjung tidak perlu ditanyakan lagi kualitasnya, apalagi film ini bermain di atmosfir gelap-gelapan yang minim cahaya sekaligus meningkatkan rasa takut kepada penonton.   Rusun 15 lantai ibarat ngasih 15 sumber penderitaan. Penderitaannya variasi, poin inti ada pada Rini yang digelisahkan oleh ketakutan masa depannya. Ia diemban jadi tulang punggung keluarga, dibebani tanggung jawab mentang anak pertama. Sisi lain Pengabdi Setan 2 : Communion juga ngasih penderitaan lewat tokoh baru, bungkusannya eksplisit. Dari children abuse, toxic family, broken home, wanita malam anxiety disorder hingga pria brengsek misogini. Lebih seringnya, Pengabdi Setan 2 : Communion ngambil sudut pandang penderitaan dari anak-anak. Umur segini lagi lucu-lucunya justru dibikin sasaran tindak "kehororan" orang dewasa. Ketakutan anak-anak dan remaja inilah yang membuahkan imajinasi tentang "setan" di rusun.   etdah kenapasi second act fokusnya cuma nakut-nakutin doang, jumpscare sana sini sampe gw cape ngeliatin pocong mulu. takut kaga, yang ada malah gw ngantuk. padahal runtime-nya bisa banget dipake buat jelasin sedikit latar belakang cult yg uda di-reveal di first act. apakah ini karena baru introduction untuk film selanjutnya? idk. penyakit horror klise seperti karakter aduh-apaan-tuh-kok-serem-tapi-gw-kepo masi ada disini. ending-nya juga kurang nendang karena masih ninggalin beberapa plot holes.

  bagaimanapun juga, gw suka sama sinematografinya. Indonesia era 80an-nya kerasa sekali, ditambah bumbu-bumbu situasi politik yang terjadi pada masa itu. kalo dibilang quantity over quality saya nda tau yah, takut diserang si bapak hehe

  Lol this is to be fair the first time Twitter almost convince me that a movie bad. Personally I say the portion of jumpscare in this movie not as much as they describe and the cult mystery revealed enought here (even tho I wish it revealed more wkwk), and again they said it was lack of story matter. But I, too agree that the middle of this movie is more boring than the opening and ending (that lift massacre scared the shit outta me), some unecessary scene and too much and long build-up jumpscare or whatever.

  Kalo Thor punya sub-judul: Love & Thunder, PS2 harusnya dikasih sub-judul: Petir & Mati Lampu. Hampir keseluruhan film isinya kayak gini. PS2 jatoh ke trope film horor mainstream dan agak annoying.

  Alur cerita maaf banget, klise parah. Eksekusi horor banyak pengulangan adegan dari PS1, apa itu kreativitas? Lol. Sisi paling mengganggu, ada di klimaks. Sebenernya seru tapi gegara petir jedar jeder duar dan lampu mati-nyala yang barbar, jadi annoying.

  Untungnya, PS2 punya adegan dengan tingkat thrill tinggi sewaktu lift jatoh. Itu terbaik banget. Buat rating usia 13+, PS2 ngebunuh karakternya termasuk sadis. Scoring music gila, kursi sampe ikut geter. Transisi adegan sholat juga keren. Ratu Felisha cantikkk, auranya love maksimal.

  Well, PS2 emang lebih brutal. Tapi enggak sebaik dan se-memorable PS1. Udah waktunya industri film horor kita mulai ninggalin petir & mati lampu.

  A real disappointment as a sequel to the first film. This is an Indonesian occult film which is full of interesting ideas that unfocused narrative and bad pacing unfortunately suffocates. They set up a suffocating atmosphere of unease, building up tension and leading to believe that something horrible and incredible is about to happen. Instead, it's just another unnecessarily long sequel, filled with cheap scares and rather typical horror tropes throughout. Lingering shots are HEAVILY overused to the point that it annoyed me. Not to mention its pretty weak attempts at comedy. At times, the film leans way too much towards the comedy and it rarely sells. If you're into polished, overlong, jumpscary horror, you'll probably like this one. Otherwise, don't bother. This sequel hits Shudder on November 4, btw.

  This is Joko's closest work to The Shining and his Empire Strikes Back. With more ambitious than the first one, the film elevate anything that happened in the first film. Not drastically, of course. But still elevating.

  From the first 15 minutes, the film also revealed the cities the film take place. Not like other Joko's film that just make it imaginary or fictional cities. And Not gonna lie about it, this is reasonable. Cause Joko try to portray lots about socio-political in two era of government that have lots of mysteries to reveal.
