I had been passing this little gem up for a long time! Then I read a review on Letterboxd by Si Sharp today that made me rethink my quick dismissal!
My initial reaction to the opening of the film was a knee jerk reaction to stop and remove it from my que! Reason being it was more than obvious it was an extremely low budget film hence the crappy look and feel of the film and the belligerent junkie was particularly annoying.. until we get to know him!
Luckily for me I'm one of those that likes to see things through! I had seen Train Spotting so I was asking myself do you really need to see another film about…
I absolutely love Resolution for its ambition. The problem is that that ambition is its very downfall, causing its lack of focus and uneven pacing.
Shot with a microbudget, it relates a story about friendship, self destruction and paranormal entities. Each and every segment could have made for an interesting film had the others been left out. Resolution tries to tackle them all and manages the friendship theme best. The other two are dealt with without exploring their full potential. A shame, because what we get to see seems very interesting.
The two central performances are excellent. They make their characters work and thus their relationship becomes believable. The look and feel of the film certainly betray its small budget,…
When Mike receives a cry for help from Chris in the form of a video, he wastes no time in heeding the call. He arrives at Chris's dilapidated cabin to find his old buddy in bad shape, strung out on crack and shooting wildly at non-existent birds. After a brief, futile attempt to talk Chris into going to rehab, Mike takes matters into his own hands and cuffs him to a pipe for some extreme cold turkey. Over the course of the next week, as Chris goes through personal hell, Mike explores the area around the cabin and begins to discover strange recordings lying around in a variety of formats that increasingly appear to suggest the pair are being manipulated…
Every once in a while, I see a film that is REALLY trying something new. In Resolution, I literally knew within ten seconds that this film was going for it: a guy smoking crack, yelling at birds, crying, shooting birds, curling into a ball, crying, screaming at (maybe?) birds, smoking crack-VIDEO FREEZES.
Cut to his friend watching this on a video on his laptop. Later that night, his pregnant wife tells him that going to help this old best friend/current addict is not only a bad idea, but a selfish one. We all know that he’s going, though.
Meanwhile, something happens to the entire frame three times in the first three or so minutes. A shaking of the screen? A juicing of the…
ok but you have to actually do something. i've heard one too many people saying stuff like "But it knows it's a horror movie," or "Obviously made by people who love and understand horror," whatever that means.
so what? count me in with the monster or whatever it is, i want my story.
Debut feature from Benson and Moorhead that would go on to spawn The Endless. The central story basically focuses on a man that goes off to a cabin in the woods to help his junkie friend beat the habit; but it's not long before he begins to suspect that something is manipulating the situation. The film is deliberately paced and plays it's cards very close to its chest. The drama between the two men is central but the film constantly hints at a deeper mystery without ever going all in. The result is a film that is consistently compelling. There's so many small elements here that go towards creating the overall story. For a low budget film everything is extremely…
Film 22/45 for Hooptober 4.0
7/6 of 6 Decades (2010’s)
This is definitely a film that came in out of nowhere and flew right under the radar so I’m glad I saw it because it’s pretty damn good!
Michael goes to his best friend Chris’s cabin in the woods and proceeds to handcuff Chris to a pipe in order to force him to quit using drugs. As the detox progresses, they both begin to realize that someone or something is watching their every move. That’s not 100% accurate but is the best plot summary I can think of to give without ruining anything. The story in general is pretty engaging. I may have found it a little more interesting (and…
Jesus Christ the amount of people comparing this to Cabin in the Woods because it takes place in a cabin in the woods. I guess Titanic must’ve ripped off Speed 2 since they both take place on a fucking boat.
Phenomenally meta, Resolution has just enough self awareness to strike a balance between dropping clues, and leaving room for ambiguity. I get the comparison to The Cabin In The Woods but the way in which the film realises its narrative is completely different. A gem everyone should check out before seeing The Endless (2017).
Moorhead and Benson can’t really seem to put a good film together, I’m sorry
It's such an exciting feeling, when a film is announced that you know without a doubt you will be seeing with high expectations the moment it is released. A director is chosen and it inspires a reaction inside me, good or bad. Casting news, who will be composing the score, which top of the line cinematographer is selected to dazzle the audience with their keen eye. The first teaser trailer, a second one unveiling far more detail, and various clips to quench the cinematic thirst until the picture is finally released and I can take my seat, overflowing with anticipation, counting on the finished product being everything I could have hoped for and more.
This is the progression that many…
