  This movie is ridiculous. It's a horror-comedy about Dracula's granddaughter who falls in love with the guitar player for a disco band. It's the kind of movie that only the late 70s could produce. It's that odd mix of corny humor, wide eyed innocence, and a couple of scenes that are way too horny for the rest of the film. Like finding a Penthouse pictorial stapled into a MAD magazine. It's very low budget and very sparse. There isn't much more to it than that, at least not on the surface. Just bellow that though, there are some interesting things happening here that I think may make it worth your time.

  Disco vampires of the world unite! Exactly the kind of insane vanity project I live for. I don't even know where to begin with Brother Theodore's lines -

  "As long as there is death, there is hope."

  is a classic, though I also enjoyed:

  "Bitch! Soon I'll call the shots here. I'll keep you pregnant and barefoot and let you eat under the table... I'll turn the pretty young pig into an ugly old sow!"

  Eek. Lay off, bro. Anyway... Cartoon bats! Nocturna's crazy tribal mating dance! And the decision to pair Nai Bonet, the Tila Tequila of her day, with people who can act, like John Carradine and Yvonne De Carlo... No matter, I love Bonet/Nocturna very much. Her Prince Charming, Mr. Threepiecesuit Discopants, is a walking talking slice of Wonder Bread though.

  not sure why it took me until 2021 to see the old NYC set disco Dracula movie with a horny Brother Theodore saying things like “am I never going to be her little yum-yum, her schnootzie-pootzie, her schnopsy-wopsy?   Nocturna: Granddaughter of Dracula is a stunner of an oddity, a disco-infused vampire comedy, centered around its star, co-producer, and creator, Nai Bonet.

  Bonet, half French and Vietnamese, is indeed very beautiful. A belly-dancer, singer, and actress, Bonet bankrolled Nocturna, hoping, I suppose, for it to be a star-making vehicle rather than the vanity project flop it became.

  Bonet herself is the film’s strangest player, delivering every line in a studied, flat diction like nothing I can accurately place my finger upon. She dances and swirls, strips down for a sex scene and a bath in her very shapely altogether. She got Gloria Gaynor to sing her theme song, and dances into the center of scenes, to everyone’s rapt appreciation.…

  What We Do In The Shadows but 70s so lots of disco, lots of nudity, and John Carradine as Dracula. There's what feels like a 15-minute scene of Brother Theodore (aka Reuben Klopek) watching Nai Bonet take a bath, rubbin' a curtain over his "entertainment center" (penis) Wiseau-style, and going: "I'm too easily aroused, cows have to wear brassieres when I go to the countryside." Joe Dante saw this and went "This is the energy I need for The Burbs!"

  I've said before that I don't much care for vampires- although thankfully, neither do the people behind Nocturna. There's very little reason for this movie to have vampires at all save for dumb jokes- vampires could be replaced with any other generic culture shock narrative for the same effect. Good thing the dumb jokes are pretty funny, though.

  How do you not love a good disco-Dracula movie?! It's impossible.

  In Nocturna, Dracula's titular granddaughter, played by Nai Bonet, falls for a guy who plays guitar in a disco band. Of course Grandpa hates the idea of his royal progeny playing with her food, and sets out to stop this filthy slumming. But Nocturna knows better - this is special, and she can prove it too. When this vampiric vixen gets down (dances) with her boy-toy, she can see her reflection in the mirror! It must be love.

  Nocturna has some surprisingly fun performances from the likes of Sy Richardson, Brother Theorore, Yvonne DeCarlo and John Carradine. Also, Vickie Sue Robinson ("Turn the Beat Around") and Gloria Gaynor ("Never Can Say Goodbye") lend a handful of infectious grooves to the proceedings. All in all, this is a pretty great monster-comedy in the vein (sorry about that) as the also-enjoyable Vampira.

  a lot of weird stuff going on in the periphery - yvonne decarlo as an edie mclurg-esque spinster vamp named "juggala vein," a international cabal of stereotypes who are also vampires (pimp vampire, gabagool vampire) and the overpowering sexual menace of brother theodore. all of that stays well in the periphery, though, in favor of a lotttt of walking around while looking sexy montages, disco dancing while looking sexy montages, and so on. you'd expect the disco to be real low-rent stuff, but nah - it's decently produced philly soul-adjacent stuff featuring vox from some surprisingly big names (gloria gaynor AND vicki sue robinson!) fun stuff and tacky vibes abound.

  Vampires leaving Transylvania to go disco dancing in the big city as a parable of trans and queer liberation, nearly perfect 70s NYC sleaze and I'm obsessed.

  It has really good production design and 1000% deserves the Vinegar Syndrome/Arrow treatment but the fact that the only copy around seems to be a VHS rip feels just right, too.

  'Blade' borrow a lot from this disco-drug fueled Vampire allegory for drugs in the big city, this flick has a dentured John Carradine, long naked bathing scene, club dancing, funk band rehearsals, vampire mafia, and funny animated transformations.

  Came off like a solid, campy passion project. Worst leading lady I've seen in a MINUTE.
