An old VHS staple of mine, and something I never noticed before, but Robert Loggia tries to give Ireland the football butt slap when she goes into a game for the first time, amazing.

Perfect timing. Post holiday decompression with laid back jokes, simple, winning plot and likable characters. Oh, and I get to spend time with Mr. Loggia, who is missed. Coach Rig is a perfect fit for him, where he can be gruff, comical and at the same time, gentle. Such a treat.
Second favorite laugh of the movie.

Saw this on TV all the time as a kid. And just as I feared, it's a little too mid to make for a fun bad movie night. Robert fucking Loggia though.

Perfectly watchable, but underwhelming attempt to apply the template of Major League to college football. I did like how their goal was just to win one game instead of a contrived scenario to reach the state championship, and a hilarious sequence where they have a scrimmage game with a prison team(filled with cameos from NFL players like Jerry Rice, Dick Butkus, and uh… current senatorial candidate Herschel Walker). But it’s watchable enough to make a perfect movie to be aired constantly on TV, and I can see how Necessary Roughness got some fans. Kathy Ireland as the team’s kicker doesn’t hurt.
I guess my main issue was that the team’s obligatory lot of misfits all felt underdeveloped, in contrast to…

What do you get when you mix Quantum Leap guy, football, and Sinbad? This movie.
It’s okay, but no where near the level of other football movies.
May be my favorite football movie of all time. As a huge Quantum Leap fan, I love Scott Bakula. Sure its marred by the cliché dports comedy tropes. Hell haven't we seen thst most sports films are about a rag tag team full of never will be players making good. What separates this in my mind is my love of the cast. Besides Bakula. There is the late great Robert Loggia, Hector Elizondo, Sinbad, Jason Bateman, Larry Miller, Fred Dalton Thompson, Duane Davis and Harley Jane Kozack. I love the entire cast, those who i have seen before snd since and even those i never saw ever again. Rob Schneider may be a bit too annoying and as I said may not be most original of sports comedies, but this cast makes it truly loveable.
This movie wants to be Major League so bad. Unfortunately having Sinbad and Rob Schneider makes that impossible.
This continues to be a favorite for when I’m not feeling well. It gets me in good spirits every time. There’s no good reason for it—it’s just a film I’ve watched a ton that has always been there for me. The acting is excellent, especially the self-aware awfulness of Larry Miller; Scott Bakula and the rest of the team bring a feel of authentic work. Like the team, this film is a mediocre success—and that’s what makes it great.

On the surface this lovable losers sports comedy just seems like a retread of Major League. But there’s some heart in this tale of a college football program decimated by scandal, attempting to rebuild via open tryouts. 34 year old former high school star Paul Blake (Scott Bakula), who never attended college, gets brought into the mix to help out. And to maybe learn a little something along the way.
Bill Conti’s score is going for it way before it needs to be going for it and the jokes…
I used to love this as a kid and it's obviously not as good now, as an adult, but I'm OK with it because I love when a bunch of goofy misfit underdogs play sports to varying degrees of success.
All the bullshit cliches in one package. Mediocre films are usually much more worse than bad films and you can look at the prime example here.
I've noticed that a lot of the movies that really hit with me and I grew up watching get some bad reviews on here. This is another one. I watched this so many times as a kid. I wouldn't put it above something like Major League but it's still a ton of fun. Hadn't watched it in many years but revisiting it was enjoyable. Found I still knew many lines. It's goofy but I love it.
