sofia coppola: we are going to clear up that marie antoinette did not say "let them eat cake"
set designer: that's cool and all, but shouldn't we take these converse shoes out of the shot
sofia: what is this, a documentary?
“I’m saying goodbye.”
Sofia Coppola has always known what the fuck she’s doing. She knew what she was doing whenever she wrote this movie, she knew what she was doing when she decided the soundtrack. And by God, she knew exactly what she was doing whenever she directed the fuck out of this.
And on paper, this movie sounds like it would be a royal mess. A period piece about “The Bad Queen” herself with an alt-rock soundtrack? But, by luck, you add Sofia Coppola’s name to it, and out comes one of the most brutally honest, funny, and surprisingly relatable films I’ve ever seen. It’s been exactly one year since my first viewing of this, but now I can confidently say this is Sofia Coppola’s best film, and one of the best films ever made.
marie antoinette: i have done nothing wrong, ever, in my life.
me: i know this, and i love you.
kirsten dunst could murder everyone in my family and I still wouldn't behead her
this movie is so lovely & sweet & good that it actually made me feel sad for the rich people
movie studio execs: okay so what we’re looking for is a historically accurate biopic about the rise and fall of marie antoinette
sofia coppola: ok but hear me out...... the color pink
movie studio execs: shit u rite here’s 40 million dollars
when you give teenagers complex regal expectations (including foreign policy and battle command), but no real instruction beyond superficial customs things are gonna go bad, man. people have criticized her for it time and time again but i think there's something deeply fascinating about the way coppola indulges in, and then meditates on, the frivolity of the (french monarch) trust fund kids here--between the systemic artifice of the monarch and how well (and naturally) she wears it, this is a compelling painting of antoinette's superficiality as a tragedy not of her own making... entirely, at least.
