  I have to give to to Noah Baumbach; he's an extremely talented writer, and that was one of the darkest, most fascinating comedies(?) I've seen in quite some time... so dark, in fact, that some might argue it's not a comedy at all - quite similar in tone to his previous film, The Squid and the Whale, which is unquestionably one of my favorite black comedies of all-time. All of the performances are realized, especially Kidman's and Leigh's, and provide a realistic look into the lives of an extremely dysfunctional family, a microcosm of the selfishness that dwells in America's capitalist/consumerist/materialist…

  Noah Baumbach makes movies specifically about people I wouldn’t hang out with. And that’s saying something cause I’d hang out with anyone. Heck I’d even hang out with Joker from the movie Joker.

  Noah Baumbach has created far more characters that I relate to than any other director, which isn't good, because most of his characters are depressed assholes.

  On paper, Margot could seem like a complete villain; but her scenes of weakness (most notably the tree-climbing, hospital visit, and novel press-conference) perfectly acted by Kidman elevate the character to something unmistakably human, and flawed rather than one dimensionally "evil". I know too many of these characters in my own life, and the raw darkness of human nature Baumbach crafts which subtly permeates each frame is at times, overwhelming. I can see why this film may be too much for some people, but to me, this is Baumbach's best work and one of the most enriching and fascinating looks at characters who can't seem to step out of themselves and see how ridiculous and negative their behaviors are. It only adds to the horrifying melodrama that many of them are related, as well.

  Damn, as much as I wanna call Baumbach a one trick pony as a joke, he sure writes the hell out of family dramas. Also reminded me a bit of Jonathan Demme’s Rachel Getting Married in terms of dysfunctional family movies centered around a wedding. But this one had that distinct snappy back & forth dialogue you see in Baumbach movies, another really well-written movie by him. 

  One thing I enjoyed about the construction of this movie is how every actor was given their moments to shine individually in a given scene. Leigh, Kidman, & Black all stole the screen at different points in the movie without every overpowering the rest of the cast. Really my only complaint was a lot of scenes…
