  Starring: The Bold, Bald, Gruff Action Man Jason Statham

  One of those films with a superb cast that is, in many ways, underutilized.

  Robert De Niro appears and gets to pull out his gun and shoot at few people, but this is mostly a Statham and Clive Owen show. They both do well in their roles, particularly when it comes to the action, which isn't very memorable but is occasionally exciting and keeps me reasonably entertained. It reminded me a lot of Jason Bourne, not just in terms of action, but also in terms of the stunning cinematography, with a its blue-ish, cold tones.   It says it's set in the 80s but really doesn't look like the 80s apart from some bad fashion choices and the cars they drive. Jason Statham is being his typical self and Robert De Niro was on the screen for about 10 minutes. I don't get how a film can have such a promising cast but do so little with it.

  Killer Elite is one of those films full of English characters being played by American or Aussie actors who are just hopeless at concealing their true brogues, despite every attempt to disguise them. In a way that sums up Gary McKendry's film--adapted from Sir Ranulph Fiennes novel with the much better title of The Feather Men--in microcosm, because it spends most of the running time trying to convince you it's quite an urbane, sophisticated, period early 80's action thriller when in reality it's not fooling anyone. The simple fact is that when people aren't been murdered, cars aren't blowing up or Jason Statham isn't kicking arse in his unique way, Killer Elite is about as interesting as a newly painted…

  It's hard to overstate how quickly I stopped caring about this film. I finished it, which I'm still not positive was the right choice. Some of the action scenes seemed quite competent, but it was all without meaning. None of the characters ever mattered to me. The plot isn't interesting.

  Ein Actionthriller, der auf einer wahren Begebenheit beruht. Der Auftragskiller Danny Bryce (Jason Statham) muss seinen Freund und Mentor Hunter (Robert De Niro) aus den Klauen eines omanischen Scheichs befreien.

  Der Scheich verlangt dafür, dass Bryce die Mörder seiner drei Söhne - britische Elitesoldaten - umbringt. Bryce lässt sich auf den Handel ein. Doch die Gegenseite bekommt Wind von der Racheaktion ...

  Der Actionthriller unterhält recht gut, bietet viel Actionszenen, die wiederum gut inszeniert sind. Kritiker würden wahrscheinlich sagen, dass es ein Actionfilm ist, der in die 80er-Jahre passt. Damit liegt man nicht so falsch. Aber das muss ja nichts Schlechtes sein. Bin ein Fan der 80er-Jahre-Actionstreifen und somit mir dieser hier auch gefallen. Das Duo Statham/De Niro harmoniert gut. Der Gegenspieler, verkörpert von Clive Owen, passt auch.
  Also alles gut. Darf man sich ruhig mal anschauen.

  Can someone please explain the concept of intonation to Mr. Owen?

  Honestly, he sounds like a foghorn. Which is still less annoying than Dominic Purcell's ridiculous accent.

  And yet, he still outacts the Artist Formerly Known As Robert DeNiro.

  As does the Stath.

  That makes me sad.

  19 | Watch an action spy film.

  So...at the beginning of the year a Letteboxd fellow named THX 04 started this interesting challenge named ACTIONx52...and I decided to join the bandwagon.
  The idea is to pick 52 action movies, which I did, and to watch them all by the end of this year, and of course, to write reviews on all 52 titles...

  Unfortunately it took me some time to finally start watching movies from my ACTIONx52 list, and the first one in line is the KILLER ELITE staring Jason Statham and Robert De Niro. I chose this in the category Watch an action spy film, simply because I wasn't in the mood to watch James Bond movies…

  A group of ex SAS are tasked with hunting and killing another group of ex SAS whilst they in turn are being investigated by another group of ex SAS?!
  Starring Robert De Niro. Minus the Robert De Niro.
  A convoluted and massively overlong slog that tries to straddle the line between being a weighty and faithful recounting of "true events" and a bombastic Stath actioner that fails miserably.
  It has its moments, but only after having to wade through long stretches of confusing developments, macho posturing, bad accents and boring characters. Which takes some doing with such a stacked cast.

  Set in 1980, a once ruthless killer for hire Danny (Jason Statham) is drawn back into that world when his old mentor, Hunter (Robert De Niro) is captured by a disgraced sheikh. For Hunter's safe return, Danny must track down and kill three members of the SAS, responsible for the death of the sheikh's sons. Standing in Danny and his teams way is former SAS man Spike (Clive Owen), who is part of a secret organisation of former SAS operatives called the Feather Men. The task proves to be challenging.

  I was under the mistaken impression that the latest film in my mini #StathFest was a remake of the Sam Peckinpah directed The Killer Elite.

  It's not, which was to my half-relief, because The Killer Elite was crap. At the same time, if you're going to remake something, definitely opt for something that wasted a hell of a lot of potential that you could put right. This is all completely beside the point now anyway because instead it's some story about the SAS and covert operations in Oman and shadowy government agencies and a whole load of crap that didn't make a jot of sense.
