john mulaney at his intervention: i'm the only one here serving cunt 😭 omg this is so embarrassing 😭😭
a group of comedians at an intervention refusing to do bits is, ironically, just great comedy
there are a few audiences for this one, some of which overlap I’m sure
1. young female fans with an insane parasocial relationship to him and his personal life
2. general comedy nerds who are also, more often than not, annoying
3. people who like him and also have defining experiences with addiction (self, family, partner), in-patient rehab or hospitalization, etc
I was really watching this as #3 and I gotta say, have no personal interest in the opinions of #1 or #2. if you’ve been pulled into the orbit of active addiction or mental illness, in any capacity, I think there’s a real joy from being able to laugh at the heinous, manipulative, cruel behavior that arises therein. it’s…
“What’s someone gonna do to me that’s worse than what I would do to myself?”
obviously quite funny, but honestly really impressed with how the line between tragedy and comedy here is woven so effectively and thoughtfully, a feat that’s remarkably hard to achieve and nothing short of emotionally/personally really striking
default answer to any question from now on: if you heard that spoon drop its because im eating a bowl of FRUIT LOOPS
He's still extremely funny! A million screaming tumblrs operated by parasocial freaks who can't square folding phrases like "bold of you to assume" into their psyches with the cruel realities of addiction can't take that from him. Good! Maybe the central thesis of this special is "likability is a prison" and it's nice to see him squeeze out from between the bars without offering a single apology to an audience he never actually wronged.
Not to overshare but I found a lot of this unfortunately relatable. Never more so than when he's recapping an exploitative interview GQ conducted with him in the throes of his cocaine addiction and his coked up, delusional ramblings sound almost exactly like my nine and a half years sober conversational style. Not even sure what I'm supposed to do with that. Oh well!
“i used to care what everyone thought about me. it was all i cared about. and i don’t anymore because i can honestly say, what is someone gonna do to me that’s worse than what i would do to myself? what? are you gonna CANCEL john mulaney? i’ll kill him. i almost did.”
It’s time to laugh!
Raise up your smiles,
Lower those masks
You know what I mean
We all quarantined
We all went to rehab
And we all got divorced
And now our reputation is different
No one knows what to think
All the kids like Bo Burnham more
Because he’s currently less problematic
