Do you ever think about how Shane Black made a movie grappling with his years in Freudian analysis that was also part of a superhero franchise
Please point me in the direction of more superhero films which deal with trauma, and/or post-traumatic stress.
this is still far and away the best Marvel movie. tackles American exceptionalism and imperialism so cleverly. the villain is a rich white capitalist who invents a vaguely Middle Eastern caricature to distract Americans from his wrongdoings. the character War Machine is painted the colors of the flag as part of a rebrand as Iron Patriot, literally masking a war machine in the guise of patriotism. suicide bombings, a staple of 21st century terrorism, are carried out by American veterans on American soil.
and then there's the deconstruction of Iron Man's symbolic significance. the film treats Tony and Iron Man as disparate elements, and debates which one can really be considered a superhero. Tony keeps remotely piloting suits, sending them out on his behalf. Iron Man can withstand trauma in ways Tony can't, emotional trauma most of all. this movie is brilliant and it's so much better than all the other MCU movies. it's mind-boggling that anyone thinks otherwise.
pepper and tony are the blueprint for the girlboss/malewife trope. know your herstory
in this essay i will discuss how the use of eiffel 65's blue (da ba dee) in the opening of iron man 3 is the perfect representation of tony stark's mental illnesses. while the song is, on a surface level, an upbeat party song, its underlying message is about depression ("blue man who lives in a blue world"). this is especially relevant to pre-iron man tony, who covers his lack of emotional fulfilment with excessive partying and drinking, much like the song conceals its darker meaning,
hot take: tony's character development in this is the best thing the mcu has ever done.
