By 1987, with the best will in the world, Francis Ford Coppola was in a rut. Once From the Heart had been the financial disaster to end his American Zoetrope dream, and whilst he followed it up with interesting films like Rumble Fish, they bombed hard at the box office until he was rendered a spent force by the media.
