refreshing take on the apocalypse film. feels like something everyone would be talking about 10 years ago and something that would be anything but a comfort watch one year ago. probably my go-to recommendation for thanksgiving 2021
Even now, after surviving for more than 100 years and almost as many supposed deaths, the movies are still full of surprises. I submit to you the following as further proof of that phenomenon: At a time when feature-length sci-fi is dominated by franchise spectacle, someone made a tender, quiet, and terrifically affecting post-apocalyptic drama in which Tom Hanks plays a dying engineer named Finch Weinberg who builds a robot to care for his rescue dog once he’s gone. That isn’t the strange part. No, the strange part is that Finch’s creation — a sentient, Hertzfeldian nine-foot can opener who dubs himself “Jeff” after his AI formatting is interrupted by the superstorm that sends this story on a road trip…
Like many Apple TV+ originals this year (Palmer, Cherry and most notably Billie Eilish: The World's a Little Blurry and Coda), Finch proved to be another great success for the studio. Following Finch Weinberg (Tom Hanks) on a post-apocalyptic earth decimated by a cataclysmic solar event that has left the world a wasteland, a robot (voiced by Caleb Landry Jones) he built to protect the life of his beloved dog, learns about life, love, friendship and what it means to be human as they set out on a journey together.
It’s easy to see where the writers got their ideas from, feeling equal parts “The Martian” and “I Am Legend” allows for Finch to feel like a rather unique experience,…
Watching Castaway:
My god, just fuck the volleyball already.
Watching Finch:
My god, just fuck the robot already.

After not expecting much from this, I am more than happy to report that Finch is a sweet film. It has the post-apocalyptic storyline that we have seen countless times, and it gives us a taste as to what caused it, but that isn’t the focus here; that storyline almost feels forgotten about at points. What the film opts to focus on is the main relationship between our trio. This group includes a dog, a robot, and Tom Hanks. Think Cast Away, but…
A simple, well-worn story told with great care and emotion is sometimes all you need. Loved it. Jeff playing catch with Goodyear while Finch watches finally broke me. Seamus the dog is third billed, Best Supporting Canine incoming.
