Never before has a film so eloquently captured the feeling of driving to McDonalds at 3am.
happy to announce that wong kar-wai finally clicked for me and holy shit i love movies
love is fleeting. it can be experienced in the smallest of moments; the length of a song, one night together, a videotape. we're all just passengers floating through each other's lives. some of us make a bigger impact than others, but in that moment the emotion is raw and real and unfiltered. we're messy, chaotic creatures; we're explosively poetic. nothing captures that quite like fallen angels.
i think after a third viewing i've finally been able to wrap my thoughts around this film and the beautiful, violent, romance of it all. i'm just so grateful that this film exists; that it gives me the knowledge that as my life goes on i'll get to experience more love and bring new people into my life and myself into theirs. no matter how fleeting that feeling may be.
minus half a star for that poor actress who had to pretend to have a 3-min orgasm from rubbing her fingers on her clothed thighs

for an hour and thirty five minutes, let wong kar wai heal your broken heart. he healed mine, ever so slightly. this is what a perfect film is to me.

For a follow-up to a film that in no way, shape, of form needed one, Fallen Angels not only admirably lives up to the pressure of being a sequel to Chungking Express, it manages to expand the themes of the previous two segments (putting all in a much clearer and distinct light), and does so in such a tonally and structurally different way that it's difficult to tell which is the stronger piece in the end. It's apples and oranges to compare the two, but they're in the same basket - if that makes any sense. Truth be told, I'd rather consider them a single film; Chungking Angels - a three hour…
Wong Kar-wai's John Woo movie; a dreamy, romantic portrait of the oddballs and outcasts who populate the Hong Kong underworld and their longing for intimacy in professions and a general, palpable hostile city nightlife that necessitates distance. The extreme wide-angle lens, handheld close-ups of neon-lit motorcycle riding and bloody gunfights is the sorta shit movies were invented for.
Uniquely mesmerizing and charmingly bizarre. Wong’s movies are maybe the most deserving of the cliched phrase “so beautiful it hurts.”
