  Great allegory: We humans condemn everything evil but are ourselves the ultimate evil.

  This anime film is completely over the top, mean spirited and ultra violent. 

  I still had a good time with this but it’s no way near the quality of the other two ,,Devilman’’ films that I’ve watched today. 

  The animations and creature designs are again top tier anime quality, but ,,Devilman - Volume 3’’ misses most of the charm and interesting ideas from it’s predecessors. 

  But, If you like fucked up stuff and want to fill your living room (or wherever it is you watch films) with tons of virtual blood and gore this might be for you! 

  PS: There a even a few parts in this film where the mighty demons fight each other and heavy metal music plays.

  While the first two OVAs had no problem just jumping into, I was pretty lost with this one. I eventually pieced stuff together but I still have zero context for these events.

  Also this OVA is mostly just shitty. Theres a cool part where Amon throws a train at someone, but outside of that it's kind of terrible. The script is bad, the original sub is flat with the performances, and the 45 minute run time feels much longer. The animation is fine and a couple of the fights are okay but outside of that it's just bad.

  Barely a story but damn, this one is so mean spirited!!! Humans rioting, mobs slaughtering people all over the place in bloody ways, including long time characters, in an almost post apocalyptic world...maybe pre-apocalyptic? I had a lot of fun with this, except maybe for the final battle and the actual art style not being quite as nice. Kinda dumb but a kid gets shot in the head with an arrow out of nowhere. So that makes it a winner in my books.

  This was... odd. Despite having recently read (and fucking LOVED) the manga, I sometimes felt lost with this third Devilman OVA. It really throws its audience in the deep end, skipping major plot points, character motivation, and (unless I'm remembering wrong) adding confusing stuff not from the main storyline (please correct me if I'm wrong... could just be my hazy memory). That said, its big moments work well. The horrifying head on a stake and the grim final shot both pack a punch, but perhaps only because it reminded me of the manga. The animation and character design is also a significant step down. Still, there's lots of horrible violence and demon nonsense so it's hard to completely dislike this. Entertaining garbage.

  Okay going back and watching this again, this is actually pretty damn great.

  Everything about the visual style that is unique to this OVA (i.e. animation, character designs, action style) I absolutely love. I don't know what words I'd use to describe the style Kenichi Takeshita went with, but it feels more angular and aggressive in style and character designs. I love the way characters like Akira and Ryo look, and I especially love this more gothic looking version of Devilman.

  This third installment is so unapologetically late 90s/early 2000s. Like, Nu Metal, Spawn comics levels of the stuff. Gone is the fun action-oriented (albeit somewhat violent) tone of the previous OVAs, and instead we get an edgy, gory and mean-spirited tale of mistrust and paranoia akin to the final chapters of Nagai's manga (though much more explicit, of course). The character design is different and the overall tone is much more horror-focused, with drony pads and atmospheric sound design that puts you on edge. The violence is cranked up to eleven and body horror elements are much more prevalent. Humanity itself ends up being the greatest villain, and the whole film is permeated by an overbearing sense of hopelessness. It's great.

  Man this is so bleak...

  Totally incoherent plot-wise (and largely divorced from the first two volumes), but easily my favorite of the trilogy because of its tonal consistency and commitment to depicting a guiding idea.  It’s just that that idea was the depravity of mankind, so whereas the first two volumes featured all sorts of body horror and were still largely fun; volume 3 is morose, but oddly more intriguing.  Really have no idea what direction the Netflix series went in, but I’m fascinated to see a more recent rendition of this material.  Netflix making the effort to revive this property today still in 2D animation (with a pretty distinct style that looks to be utilizing exaggerated squash-and-stretch principles from the images I’ve seen, something of which I’ve rarely seen taken advantage in modern animation) makes me hopeful for a really interesting and singular take on this pretty wild story.
