Robert Wise’s fact-based Second World War adventure. Richard Widmark plays a US Navy officer leading an unlikely alliance of scientists and tribesmen against the Japanese in Mongolia.
The story concerns pilot Sam McHale (Richard Widmark) who is dissatisfied to discover he is being referred to the Gobi Desert to supervise the Navy's weather station. When Sam settles in, he encounters with Mongolian tribesmen, who are tired of the Navy's company.
Once trust is recognised between the two gangs, Sam notices the natives' aptitude with horses, and he becomes absorbed in changing the Mongolian natives into a cavalry that can assist shield them in contradiction of the Japanese.
