DEMON MONKEY is like, well, a barrel of monkeys. It’s a good time. There’s liberal use of a dummy, surprise monster effects, stop-motion gore, primate transformations, and a guy obsessed with garlic who takes a shower with his clothes on. What more could you possibly want? While at times the film does get a little chatty and repetitive, and plot points are rehashed several times, DEMON MONKEY consistently delivers. It’s fun to watch Barry Prima duke it out with a bloodthirsty primate monster. The costume really gets a lot of screen time and mileage, as it should. This movie is further proof that we all really need to visit Indonesia. There’s a creative energy there that we must bottle and…
A mom and dad visit a cursed island where they find a magical doll. The doll is meant to be carved out of wood, but it’s clearly a store-bought plastic one. They also meet a potbellied tribal leader who speaks in an annoyingly modulated robot voice. He likes to shimmy his hips which is also annoying. All of this leads to mom & dad’s teenage daughter turning into a ketchup-puking gorilla. Barry Prima shows up long enough to establish that he’s a character in the film, then reappears at the very end to battle a demon warrior. The demon warrior has two little people as henchmen; he turns them into dolls and uses them as combat weapons. Barry Prima repeat chest-kicks the demon until he vomits pancake batter. Recommended.
Wild/gory Indonesian horror with Advent Bangun and his pregnant wife getting cursed by an island tribe. 18 years later they attack again using a zombie monkey monster that tears off limbs. Barry Prima does kung fu and fights dwarves. Recommended.
