maybe a little biased coming from the premiere tiff screening but hard not to laugh and smile through most of this. needed a second run in the editing room, i’ll say that! a perfect 100 minute movie, what’s with the extra 15 minutes? but i had fun! billy eichner has the range to carry a lead role, apparently
This movie is so hard to review because I'm struggling to decide how much I should let my enjoyment affect my rating. I genuinely had a good time and laughed quite a bit whenever I wasn't rolling my eyes or heavily sighing. This movie dares to ask the question, "what if annoying gay people got laid too," and while I admire the gusto, I do have to wonder the love story this could've been if Billy Eichner didn't hate himself or other gay people. This movie INSISTS you put up with a self-loathing, jaded, narcissist as a main protagonist and watch as he whines and groans about the plight of how superficial queer-dating is, before and after that same main…
Seth Rogen sat two rows behind me at the premiere and all I could focus on was his laugh.
a failure—but an interesting one. funny often, but never enough to elude the fact that it’s just not working. I am actually a longtime fan of Eichner, for what it’s worth, and thought often of one of his best Billy videos—do gay people care about John Oliver? (kind of!) it’s weird to me that he would then miss that kind of thinking in his own work, which is—do gay people care about the studio romantic comedy? it’s clear that Eichner thinks he’s never gonna get another chance to make a movie this big or expensive (—and why would he want to? what about “studio filmmaking” is exciting to him? especially one with such shoddy technicals, e.g. bad ADR, fake score), so…
my note for most movies (including this one) is that they need at least 100% more guy branum
It might be a tad long but Bros is unquestionably the funniest movie of the year thus far. Which maybe was expected but what I didn’t expect was for Eichner to completely crush it both comedically and emotionally.
It feels like it’s been a minute since a big studio rom-com has made me emotional, but Bros, in the midst of all the hilarity, delivers the full experience. An instant modern rom-com classic and a movie I’ll watch a hundred more times.
