my pick for the palme. an empathetic road trip odyssey reflecting on the family we choose and the family we tearfully let go of. i might be biased but i thought lee ji-eun was particularly outstanding (in a film with song kang-ho!)
koreeda, song kang ho, bae doona and IU working on the same film!!?! guess i finally found a motivation to stay alive
It's hard to be a broken person. Feel the abandonment, rejection and loneliness coming from an often invisible flaw in our being. Something we are unable to identify. Why are we left behind? Is there anything missing to be desirable, or at least tolerated? Broker, the kind, sad and beautiful new film by Hirokazu Koreeda, stars a number of such people. People who, like broken glass, were shattered and now find themselves lost in the puzzle of life, with nowhere to fit. But the magic of this exciting journey about families found along the way is in recognizing how special it is the moment when our voids are filled by the yearning for someone else's connection. Someone as familiar with…
Watching Kore-eda’s films has never been as simple as the scenes or images he captures on film. The magic of his work lies in how it always manages to make me stop judging the characters and events unfolding on screen. He has this innate ability of balancing melodrama with true-to-life reality, and his unabashedly heartfelt approach shines through here. While some scenes are overtly manipulative, they do not outweigh the moments of genuine inspiration and spontaneity; like trips to theme parks and car washes that show how relationships are formed through shared experiences and openness with oneself.
Broker isn’t about what one thinks it would entail— it centres around a mother and how she feels towards her baby (which she…
Typically bittersweet from Kore-eda will another strange, tender family - but I found it much more complex here with questions of forgiveness and responsibility and choice, crucially the wrestle with a woman’s choice that never feels right, whatever you do. It takes a master to get that conflict right
I'll probably see a lot of great movies for the next few days, but I highly doubt anything will be as good as Broker. Twenty minutes into the movie and I already knew this was going to be a masterpiece. It's probably Kore-eda's most plot-driven film, but it still *feels* like classic Kore-eda. Brilliant screenplay and such an emotional plot. It's just right up my alley.
There is a sequence that takes place in a Ferris wheel partway through the film and I guarantee that scene is going to make entire theaters cry when it comes out. I was shedding tears in that scene and I swear half the theater was as well. IU steals the show. I haven't seen…
| WINNER Cannes Film Festival 2022 Best Actor for Song Kang-hoo 🏆
Broker is another entry in Koreeda magnificent career. This was (again) another very emotionally moving film about chosen family. Very Koreeda-esque and had similarity to Shoplifters (who won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 2018)
.
Broker, a road trip odyssey reflecting on the family we choose and the family we tearfully let go of. Absorbing and heartwarming, it’s easy to forget that this tender drama is about human trafficking. I had a question mark on the value of a warm and harmonious "family" that always made me feel "thank you for being born," which I had never considered or doubted. It slowly turns out that this warm…
BROKER is a beautiful and meaningful road family drama.
Ji-eun's hand rotating with raindrops as the murmur of hope softly mourning in that fine morrow. Doona's hands dancing out of her car glass, inviting flower to join in, taking out her phone to commemorate the fine tune that was flirting with evening's air. Ji-eun's hand having a duet with Dong-won's for a static, somber dance of forgiveness. They led to those little wings to flutter around. And so they soar. Brilliantly. Up above and beyond to close those delicate dances of humanity.
What a great movie. Truly a masterpiece. I cried so hard without a sound, to every second of the movie. It is pure pain.
The story is very complex, so are the characters. But it flows just like that, i didnt realize it was already 2 hours.
How every characters get their closure through the character that they should despise the most, is truly beautiful.
Yeah, what a strange family.
