Of all the stars that were born out of the early years of ‘Saturday Night Live,’ John Belushi was my least favorite. I never cared for ‘Animal House’ or ‘The Blues Brothers’ films either. However, I have found that often watching documentary’s on these icons that don’t personally speak to me, will help garner a new found respect for their genius.
This was not one of those times.
Throughout this documentary, Belushi was characterized as a physical comedy genius, but also as an asshole who needed to be the alpha male, who didn’t respect women and who ruined his life with drugs.
Regardless, I still enjoyed much of this documentary as it filled in the needed backstory on Belushi’s upbringing, and spent a fair amount of time discussing the early days of SNL, which is a subject I am very interested in.
