Thank GOD Tim Burton made this movie in 1988 and not 2008. Can you imagine what a piece of shit this would’ve been with a ton of green & purple CGI swirls and Johnny Depp as Beetlejuice? Goddamn.
Much better than I remember! First time I saw this was in 7th grade and all I remember about that experience was going “I can’t believe they’re playing 6 foot 7 foot by Lil Wayne!!”

This movie really shouldn't work as well as it does. None of the concepts or ideas involving the afterlife have any cohesion and it's basically a mix of sketches and haphazard, last-minute plot functions, but it's brilliant nonetheless. The melancholy of being dead, in addition to its annoyances and inexplicable standards - the 'case worker' character, with her cigarette smoke flowing out of her slit throat, is hilariously ghoulish and representative of the mundanity in the afterlife - has never been explored so delicately. Plus, it's just immensely watchable; an hour and a half of Prime-Time-Burton and a slew of great character actors dancing in the graveyard of their former lives.
