Respect to the fan girl at the TIFF Q&A who angrily listed her favorite lines from the book and demanded to know why they were left out of the film
i know that we as the queer community are definitely moving in the right direction because we’re finally getting gay romance movies where the dialogue is just as bad as it is in straight romance movies
If this movie teaches us anything….it’s that the masturbation letter works only in book form
i’m being generous because this is based on my favorite book of all time, but this was pretty rough. it felt like a first draft - some really nice ideas, but just not really executed well.
Aitch Alberto is fine director, and you can tell she had somewhat of a vision here, but her script is unfortunately really messy and hollow. Felt like someone else should have written the script tbh. and while i tried to not compare it to the book, i couldn’t help but mourn the nuance and pacing of the novel. the film had none of that.
It felt like Alberto was more worried about including all the major moments from the book, but forgot to actually…
Super super super cute. Can sit very nicely alongside the likes of Love Simon, Heartstopper, Crush, The Half Of It. Why isn’t this being talked about more? Ari was gorgeous, and that soundtrack? Loved loved loved it so much. One for all the sentimental, sensitive gay boys out there. Smile from ear to ear right now.
Major ‘August’ by Taylor Swift vibes. 😊
this is literally my favorite book ever i cant count the number of times ive read it.. i hope they dont mess this up. if you havent read the novel please do!!! its beautiful
Just walked out of the world premiere of this film at TIFF. All i’m going to say to the ari and dante fans is we have been blessed. The actors understood the assignment, they ARE ari and dante. The director truly loves this book and these characters and made a film that is so true to the story and yet also her own in a way that is so perfect. Go watch this as soon as you can. Bring tissues.
Very adorable and cute. Often it features the intimacy usually reserved for home videos if that makes sense. Performances very understated which makes the more emotional moments hit even harder. A lot of people had a problem with the ADR here but it wasn’t too bad for me. Didn’t even notice them lipping words they weren’t saying. I was also thrilled with how they added stylistic flair for a few scenes. Made some stuff very intense.
Some of the pacing was off but the third act made a lot of it work. Has potential to become a 4.5 for me on a rewatch but for now it joins a long line of stellar gay movies I’ve seen this year. You…
