Gurus in the late Goryeo dynasty try to obtain a fabled, holy sword, and humans in 2022 hunt down an alien prisoner that is locked in a human's body. The two parties cross paths when a time-traveling portal opens up.

FIRST SCENE: We're told an alien race is using human bodies as prisons for their criminals (because their society refuses to kill, but when imprisoned in humans, the criminal dies when the human does), but some of the baddies are rebelling and trying to escape their human hosts (who don't know they have an alien in them), which leads to an opening where a Fighting Robot who drives a talking car time travels back to the 14th century Korea (using a magic glowing crystal) to re-capture a criminal trying to escape. See, time flows simultaneously, so the aliens have dropped off criminals all…

Gezählt auf dem Fantasy Filmfest 2022
Forget cowboys vs aliens; Korean bounty-hunting magicians vs time-traveling extraterrestrial Iron Man and his talking car sidekick vs alien convicts imprisoned in human brains is where it’s at.
Alienoid was even more fun upon rewatch, when I could just sit back and enjoy the wildly varied character interactions as Choi Dong-hoon escalates his genre-blending action to Stephen Chow levels of bonkers creativity. Can’t wait for Part 2 to fulfill that abrupt ending though
Of course it's too long, but it still manages to move along somewhat swiftly, over-complicating its simple plot, having Kim Tae-ri do Bulletstorm slides while firing a glock (or whatever gun it is), a finale that features some action that feels like it was taken straight out of a 90s HK Wu Xia film and featuring several standout moments of the Con Air guitar lead.
So while it is a bit of a mixed bag, there's also a lot of good here and I'm certainly keen to give it a rewatch when the second part comes around.

A motley assortment of genres that by all rights shouldn't work together: a time-hopping science-fiction tale involving an alien invasion and people using firearms in 14th century Korea; a post-MCU superhero yarn, complete with an Iron Man proxy (pretty sure this uses the same exact sound design as Robert Downey's repulsor rays too) and "Man of Steel"-style citywide destruction; and a fantasy-tinged wuxia with a Stephen Chow-esque sense of humor. Somehow, the center holds. While director Choi Dong-hoon ("Assassination," "The Thieves") has been doing this kind of 'massive Korean ensemble with Hong Kong-influenced setpieces' for at least a decade now, "Alienoid" might be the one that finally won me over.
