A young student believes that the spirit of an alien from another planet has gone back in time, taking over his body to infiltrate and study humanity in order to find the reasons why our civilization is doomed to future destruction. He replicates the spirit of another alien in a girl that he meets, and together they use their video cameras to document modern urban Japanese society.

i adore this film so much! really gives off a similar feel
to "august in the water" but in a more lighthearted and
goofy sort of manner. it felt like a quirky coming of age
story that explores what it means to be more than yourself -
to look at the world through another pair of eyes, whether
by proxy through a film lens or maybe even in another
body. all this alongside dreamy filtered landscapes, sweet
and catchy made up vocals and nostalgic home video clips,
lending it a unique and fun feeling. it's films like this one
that make you feel inspired to make something of your own.
maybe i'll go out right now and film myself with rotating camera
angles, singing my own melody without a care in the world.
A pair of high school kids pretend to be aliens and film stuff in the late 90s while occasionally breaking out into pop songs. The guy has to go back to Australia for some reason, leaving the girl to edit all the stuff they filmed into a movie, taking a nostalgia trip as she rewatches each tape.
There's a whole bunch of deeper meaning stuff in there that other reviewers have probably covered in detail, so I'll just go over what I liked: The 90s Japanese scenery, old AV equipment and those old pop songs. Definitely gonna seek out Ryoko Hirosue's discography after this. Nice trip back to yesteryear.

An astonishing movie, made at the right time when people were wondering about their future in light of this technical and architectural development, and certainly if the Japanese did not make a movie like this, no one would. Japan is one of the first countries to adopt technology and urban development in this way. Cameras are accessible to everyone. Companies are racing in length. Electricity cables extend throughout the country. People? Who are the people? How did they change? And how will they change? What is memory? Is it our way to remember our pure souls? Our souls, which have become empty, our feeling of simple astonishment disappeared, we are no longer what we were as if nothing describes what happened except for a passing scene of a quiet village on the outskirts of the country, to which polluted factory air reached.

I have been on the fence about buying a digital camera for a while because on one hand I absolutely love digital video and would love to make films but on the other hand I'm terrified of failure and actually getting one would mean having to come up with ideas and write a script... this is not easy for an incredibly lazy person that lacks motivation.

This is the most important movie for me right now. The world is a large place, but it's not the only world in the world. Inside our big world is a bunch of smaller personal worlds. To live happily in our little worlds, allows us to connect with the bigger one in a way that lets us fit in better. I can be a bunny in a human world, theres a path there. A bunny and a Sylveon living in a big human world. It seems so scary, but thats just because we haven't found harmony with it yet. We can learn to love, and we can find beauty here. Beauty that makes this world a home sweet home.

An interesting time capsule experiment. It's funny to watch this film a quarter of a century after its initial release when its nostalgia appeal is finally in full effect. 20th Century Nostalgia isn't a film about looking back at the past, it is a film about documenting the now, so people could feel nostalgic about it later. It's also a cute little video diary about love, where both aspects live happily together.
Anzu and Toru spend the summer together working on a film. But then Toru suddenly leaves for Australia and Anzu is left to finish the film alone. She struggles to end the project and is on the verge of abandoning it altogether, when looking through all the tapes…
