    Gate of Flesh

Survival is a messy occupation. Incredible set designs, feral performances, extra pulp, and surely anything else you’d expect from Seijun Suzuki.

Gate of Flesh is basically The Beguiled with better lighting, radder outfits, and a whole lot of social commentary.

    Unlawful Entry

I miss Ray Liotta so much. I miss his uniquely charming intensity, how he could be simultaneously terrifying and deeply sympathetic. He was an absolutely dangerous, unpredictable performer. Gone too soon.

A lot of what made Liotta so special is on display in Unlawful Entry. Stowe and Russell get to coast so the maniac can feed. This is the sort of early 90s thriller I think I took for granted. Something pretty basic that really sings with a few great leads.

    The Menu

I keep hearing that movie stars don’t exist anymore. If Anya Taylor Joy isn’t a movie star then I don’t know who is or ever was.

I was lucky to catch an advanced screening of The Menu. The audience reaction was extremely positive. I went in with high hopes but I didn’t expect to have this much fun with a bunch of random people. Folks were howling, myself included.

The script is almost rhythmic, like it’s timed for reaction. I…
