Watched this tonight to take my mind off the election coverage. A beautiful, striking movie with echoes of Edward Yang’s simmering naturalism and the loose immediacy of Charles Burnett’s Killer of Sheep. But a few bumps in the narrative broke the spell from time to time, letting the anxieties outside the theatre sneak in and distracting from the drama onscreen. Maybe I should have watched Dr. Strange and pretended in magic instead.
