    Roma 2018

    ★★ Rewatched by riley 01 Dec 2021

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

The thing that stands out about Roma first and foremost is the commitment to intricate mise-en-scène that acts as a formal exercise to recall the significance of Cuarón’s own experiences. The black-and-white cinematography is layered and rich and the camera acts as an observer to events Cuarón himself finds worthy of re-examination. Lead Yalitza Aparicio, who had no previous acting experience before the film, injects the character of Cleo with a real sense of emotional turmoil. I found myself conflicted…

Roma is a challenging film to watch because of the gut-wrenching reality portrayed on screen. The story follows a young woman named Cleo in her life as a servant to a family. We follow her through hardships and danger as the political unrest in the city surrounding her worsens. My favorite portion of the film is the meticulous details put into the sound design. My favorite scene in the entire film is once the father comes home and he reverses…

Alfonso Cuarón's Roma is such a beautifully shot film with an extremely somber storyline. Cuarón does a wonderful job at transporting the viewer into the environment of the film by using wide shots and having the camera rotate to show every detail. It almost felt like watching a Stanley Kubrick film because of the way the camera remained stationary or focused on an individual character as they move through the space. The most impactful scene in the film is by…

Roma, following the life of Cleo, a maid for a family in Mexico, is a very emotional and beautiful film to watch. I had no expectations or ideas of what this film was about when first watching it, but I was instantly sucked into it and found myself entranced. The most fascinating parts to me are the sound and the use of black and white. I always pay attention to the sounds in films and love it when a film…

Roma follows the life and struggles of domestic worker, Cleo. I have seen quite a few films of a serious and sad nature recently, Roma, while in a similar vein, is a more hopeful film to me. I won’t get into spoiler territory; however, I will just say that this is an emotional rollercoaster and more often than not you will find yourself deeply empathizing with many of the characters in film, not just Cleo. Additionally, I think that the…

À mon âge je me cache encore pour fumer is a feminist film that focusses on the women of a community in Algeria. They live in a country that is in turmoil where terrorist attacks are common and the water frequently goes out. Also this is a country where women face both political and social discrimination. The bath house acts as a sort of safe haven that shelters the women from the craziness and harsh reality of the world they live…

À mon âge je me cache encore pour fumer is a feminist film that is a must-see for all women. Its powerful themes of the strive for independence and the trapping life Algeria women experience from even the youngest of ages, provide detailed insight into a life that is so unimaginable for most women. The structure of the film, all revolving around one day, allows for the audience to put in perspective the insides and out of these women's lives and…

À mon âge je me cache encore pour fumer is a very moving film and is definitely worth the watch. This film focuses on the discrimination and unfair treatment of women in Algeria and connects to the male dominated Islamic religion. The divide between feminism and parts of the Islamic faith are very clear in this film, especially between two of the main characters as they fight over the fairness of the Islamic religion. My favorite scene is when one…

À mon âge Je me cache encore pour fumer is a feminist film covering the many paths and lives of the different women in Algeria. My favorite part of the film is the various backgrounds the women have, but that they collaborate in staying in the safe Hamam to unwind and be free from their daily lives. The way the women find their ways to the steam house is different but they are all away from the eyes of men…

À mon âge je me cache encore pour fumer is definitely worth the watch. At first I had trouble following the plot, but once I understood that the film is about women from different backgrounds sharing their experiences, the plot became very compelling. The setting of the bathhouse plays a very important role because it serves as a common ground for women with different social backgrounds can share the same space. Having the film only take place in the bathhouse forces…

I Still Hide to Smoke is a French-Greek-Algerian film directed by Rayhana Obermeyer. The film focuses on the lives of women in Algiers and the struggles they face to exist as women in their society. This film was originally a play, and the lack of different settings definitely feels reminiscent of a stage. This factor, however, does not impact the film negatively, rather it adds to the feelings of isolation and confinement the women in this film often experience. This…
