Faisal Hashmi’s review published on Letterboxd:
Today, I drove 300 kilometers from Sharjah to Abu Dhabi and back to watch Alfonso Cuaron’s ROMA in its only cinema screening in the UAE at Cinema Space AD. It’s freely available on Netflix Middle East but every filmmaker and critic on Twitter said it’s worth a cinematic experience if possible.
Best decision I’ve made in a while.
ROMA is a technically stunning cinematic achievement. A masterpiece that quickly cements Alfonso Cuaron (Children of Men, Gravity) as my favorite living filmmaker. This is his most accomplished work yet. A deeply personal tale of love and loss with maybe the best central female performance of the year. Everything from the incredible sound design to the gorgeous black and white cinematography and some breathtaking long take sequences I’ll never forget. Sometimes it’s depressing to see a filmmaker be better than you’ll probably ever be.
By far the best film of 2018. Please watch it.
