Ernesto Zelaya

My friends say I look like David Arquette and I'm still not sure whether to take it as a compliment.

Proof that sci-fi can have the best of worlds, ideas and big spectacle. It's also proof that you don't need an overinflated budget to make a solid blockbuster. This movie looks great, and Gareth Edwards does some solid worldbuilding in showing us a future where mankind is at war with AI, forcing them to seek shelter in other parts of the world. Meanwhile, some things don't change: the military is still on hand to go stick its warmongering nose in…

    The Nun II

    ★★

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Taissa Farmiga is the real Warrior Nun and Valak is perfectly creepy when he/she/it decides to show up (which isn't often), but it's getting harder for these Conjuringverse films to stand out when they all rely on the same "dead quiet/sudden jumpscare/loud noises" formula (and even then I felt this was holding back). An improvement over the dull Part One but the bar was already low.

Though if this means that Sister Irene is going to team up with the Warrens to kick demon ass, then I'm here for it.

Hercule Poirot and his mighty moustache are back to solve a murder in some gorgeous Venice locations. A well-paced whodunit with a cast that's lower wattage compared to the previous entries, but still pretty solid. As expected, Michelle Yeoh dominates everyone despite limited screen time.

I kept wondering why a detective story needed so many horror movie jumpscares, though. If Branagh is down for more Poirot adventures, I say keep them coming.

Shyamalan does a hell of a job keeping you guessing whether or not Bautista and his crew of home invaders actually are prophets of the Apocalypse or just a bunch of deluded fanatics spouting nonsense. But that also means that M. Night writes himself into a corner, since there's only two possible ways this could end; and knowing him, you know where this will go. Suspense gives way to on-the-nose moments that spell out the obvious and the movie peters…
