“When I was older I used to be a sailor, but I drowned in a storm.”
what floored me on this rewatch of Roma was the fantastical elements present throughout—the costumed figures, the drifting spacemen, the odd visual moments that evoke a dreamlike state despite its narrative grounding in realism. watching Roma feels like watching memories of childhood—beautiful memories captured with probably the best cinematography I’ve had the pleasure of drinking up with my eyes. the exquisite craft on display works in the service of a heavy human story about family, loss, and perseverance in the face of life’s brutal hardships. a beautiful movie that’s beautifully made. 🌊
