    just without question the Best serialized anime series i have ever seen. Revelatory. Approach to serial storytelling is smart and perfectly paced, with no artificial "in this episode" type plot maneuvering. Even after 40 years of innovation in that sort of storytelling this still feels just inspired, in terms of structure and pace.

    aesthetically sometimes limited but always artful and confident. The Preposterous attention to character acting in Miyazaki's work is striking here…

    feels out-of-time, less overtly Nostalgic than just fully uninterested in what we are doing now vis a vis movies. tom cruise's weird little "welcome to my movie" preamble is full of secret seething contempt for every other modern thing at the scale of this thing.
