Mank ★★★½

Still need to process this one more... but my initial feelings are mostly disappointment. I’m a huge Fincher fan, big fan of Citizen Kane, Wells, old Hollywood, split timeline narratives, slow movies, black and white... Hell I’ve even visited Hearst’s home in California!
The film just left me mostly cold. Not fun enough to be fun, not sad enough to be sad. Mank isn’t a particularly interesting, likeable or relatable character. You never spend enough time with anyone else to really get a sense of who they are. The women (who are all played by very attractive younger actresses 🤔) who play the three female characters are all under served and over simplified... The pace is odd, sometimes it feels glacial, at other times ADD, but never smooth, always lumpy. All I can do is think of all the things it isn’t, but I don’t really get what’s so good about what it IS..?

Don’t get me wrong, it’s very well made... and I know it’s trying to do smart things. I just didn’t enjoy watching it much. And don’t really fancy ever rewatching it either... and for the first film from David Fincher in 6 years... that’s just very... disappointing.
