The Revenge: A Visit from Fate

The Revenge: A Visit from Fate ★★★

Even in his director for hire days adapting other people’s screenplays, Kiyoshi Kurosawa proves in The Revenge: A Visit from Fate his affinity for horror and more enigmatic storytelling. For the most part, the action is muted and the criminals are less like yakuza and more like a clan of energumen, but it suffers from the lack of Kurosawa’s mysterious societal critique. What’s left is a revenge film with a powerfully incongruent aesthetic, a yakuza movie shot like a horror film, an entropic action thriller. A real curio.
