Scream ★★★½

A whole lot of fun, and probably the best the franchise has been since its first installment. There's a fresh cast of characters to torment and suspect plus the returning actors are in top form (Campbell, Cox, and Arquette are all older, wiser, worn out, and sick of this shit, and they give some of their best performances); the meta commentary is sharp and the knowing in-jokes are even more knowing than ever; the franchise is willing to shake things up while still bringing back a ton of winking references to some of the best moments from earlier entries. And just like in the first installment, the sharpest blades are saved for the film world itself, with some great attacks on toxic fandom, The Last Jedi discourse, "elevated" horror, and bad reboots.
