the most "great gowns beautiful gowns" movie of 2021. every performance but plemons: 😬! kodi smit-mcphee with his hilariously swishy body language, dunst just embarrassing as a cartoon drunk, cumberbatch totally unbelievable as a guy who can successfully posture as a rough-and-tumble cowboy. thomasin mckenzie even pops up somehow doing an even weirder voice than usual. the substance of it feels like it betrays campion's precise pacing and frigid landscapes; "sometimes a guy who acts macho.......is actually kind of gay" not quite the piercing concept her craft deserves. occasionally this plays well as an ice-cold comedy about a couple of absolute freaks but it's otherwise hard to take seriously. frequently looks beautiful though. the gowns.
