Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo

Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo ★★★★★

This review is old as hell, and I should revisit the series whenever the 4th one gets released. My feelings have changed both for the better and worse in the 7 years since this review.

This is one of the best bait and switches I've ever had the pleasure of watching.
The Rebuild's were presented as a more concise, more complete version of the original series. It was intended to inject some new fresh emotions and ideas into the show with new characters and circumstance while allowing Anno to "fix" the original show.

The first two films pandered to how detractors thought Shinji SHOULD behave, and here we have Anno bringing the truth out again; we have absolutely no say in the Rebuild's will develop; and that the first two films were a pretense, a power fantasy.

In fact, Anno has, with a totally different situation, managed to recreate the slap to the face that EoE was.
This film is intended to be a visually dense, alienating experience. A massive puzzle has been placed into the Rebuild series, and the fandom is peeling apart all three films frame by frame to tease out the solution.

This film is the most Evangelion Evangelion ever has been; confusing, misleading, direct, obfuscatory, violent, loud, quiet, sweet and tragic; right there with the best episodes of the show; this is not for everyone- as much as the massive marketing push and pop art branding team tried to make it out to be. The patina of positivity that people tried to read out of the second film was just that.

I loved it, you may not. Fair enough.

Shinji's face this time around, was one of the best animated subjects I've ever seen in my life.

The visual design is nothing less than superb.
