Scream 25th Anniversary (2021)

Scream (1996) is one of my favorite films, if not my favorite film, of all time. I love how the horror and humor are so well balanced out. What I mean by this is that when the movie is tense, you can cut the tension with a knife, and when the scenes are funny, the characters are getting some genuine laughs from the audience. This mix of horror and meta-ness was always something that made Scream stand out for me, compared to other 90s slashers.
Last night, I went to go see the re-release in theaters, hoping for a teaser for Scream (2022). Unfortunately there was no teaser or footage of the new film, but we were shown never before seen behind-the-scenes footage shot during the filming of the original. As someone who’s a nerd and likes to watch bts footage on YouTube, it was nice to see these interviews and bloopers.
The re-release was remastered, and looked so nice and crisp that it almost felt like I was watching a different movie! The sound design was vastly improved and I think that modifications were made to the orchestral score, adding more emotion to a lot of the scenes between Billy and Sydney. Although I have watched this film likely more than 10 times, this time felt special, especially now that we’re nearing the release of the new Scream.
Overall it’s a no-brainer to give this film 5 stars. It’s my favorite cheesy slasher, and watching it all over again reminded me why. Check it out in theaters if you haven’t had a chance yet! 🎃
