Cinderella ★★★½

I was seven years old when this version of Cinderella originally aired, and was swept up in the costumes and dancing and romance; at the time I didn’t realize the significance of the racially diverse casting, or that Brandy was the first black woman to play Cinderella onscreen. Revisiting as an adult, I can appreciate the momentousness of this decision much more, as well as the hard work that evidently went into building the world of the fairy tale. It’s not perfect-Whitney Houston is a bit too forceful in her role as the fairy godmother, and the runtime could be trimmed somewhat-but this remains an enjoyably nostalgic look back for me.
