Ed Scheid’s review published on Letterboxd:
Shaun Parkes gives an excellent performance as Charles S. Gilpin, the first black star on Broadway, acclaimed for his performance in Eugene O'Neill's "The Emperor Jones". Parkes captures Gilpin's stage charisma as well as his frustrations and anger. John Hensley is intense as O'Neill, frequently at odds with Gilpin. though the screenplay doesn't give O'Neill as much character range as Gilpin. The film covers fascinating times of the theater, though, at times skimming through pivotal events.
