Nobody

Nobody ★★★½

It's almost too John Wick for its own good, but at the same time, it executes the formula so well, it's hard not be a fan of Ilya Naishuller's "Nobody".

Essentially if you have seen the first "John Wick" film, you already know the plot for this movie. It's a revenge style thriller backed behind a normal looking man's hidden martial art/assassin former life who doesn't take lightly to messing around with his family.

Although the storyline is a bit familiar, "Nobody" is still a highly entertaining, thrilling bloodbath of casualties from the unlikely star Bob Odenkirk. Odenkirk thrives in the role, giving his best laid back personality with a mix of the subtle deadly killer nobody expects. We don't know much about Odenkirk's past, though we understand enough to feel invested in the brutality that inevitably ensues. At the same time, the Russian mob Odenkirk's character goes up against lacks a real star to helm the intensity of his own craft, though there's still plenty of stakes and intensity to drive the excitement on screen.

Where I was really impressed with "Nobody" was its technical flare from Ilya Naishuller. Naishuller composes some brilliant set-pieces, infusing standout camera work, stunt work, and crisp editing, detailing every vicious punch and knockout with to uplift the tension and cutting action that the film has to offer. While the John Wick franchise has the neo-glow, sleek ambience to stay unique, "Nobody" counters with more edge and a darker tone to its delight. There's not much meat to its story, but as a viewer, you are enraptured in its grim atmosphere and stern stimulation from the characters.

At the end of the day, the simplicity is the reason why "Nobody" works so well. While not as expansive or inviting as the John Wick films, Naishuller is much brief in his storytelling and character building, yet still puts together a very inviting genre film. As a low budget thriller, "Nobody" still feels small in scale, but packs enough heart pounding action that will make you jump out of your seat.
